Afcons Infrastructure Ltd, a leading infrastructure company under the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, has announced the successful completion of the Addu City Development Project in the Maldives and reported significant progress on the Greater Malé Connectivity Project (GMCP) — the largest infrastructure project in the island nation’s history.
The Addu City development initiative has brought transformative changes across the islands of Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo, Feydhoo, Hulhudhoo, and Meedhoo. As part of the project, 111 kilometers of new roads have been constructed, along with a 1.4-kilometer detour road that includes two bridges spanning across the ocean. These enhancements have vastly improved connectivity and transportation efficiency within the region.
In addition to road infrastructure, the initiative has introduced a comprehensive drainage system covering 106 kilometers, which enhances flood resilience in the area. Public safety has also seen a significant boost with the installation of 160 kilometers of street lighting and 376 CCTV surveillance systems. These measures aim to provide safer, better-lit streets for residents and reduce the risk of crime and accidents.
Further upgrades include 41 kilometers of utility ducting and the construction of 38 pumping stations to support reliable water management. Together, these improvements have strengthened urban infrastructure and elevated the quality of life for communities across Addu City by enhancing mobility, safety, and sustainability.
Meanwhile, the Greater Malé Connectivity Project (GMCP) is making swift progress. Afcons has completed the vital piling stage, with 264 piles installed across 68 locations—comprising 75 marine, 85 shallow, and 104 land piles. Notably, one marine pile was driven to a depth of 120 meters, ranking it among the deepest piles installed globally. Once finished, the GMCP will link Malé with Villingili, Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi through a 6.74-kilometer infrastructure featuring three major navigation bridges, marine viaducts for deep and shallow waters, and at-grade roads, greatly enhancing regional connectivity.
Precast segment erection is underway, with each segment measuring 8.32 metres in height, 25.37 metres in width, and weighing 240 tonnes—among the largest of their kind worldwide. S Paramasivan, Managing Director, Afcons Infrastructure Ltd, said “These projects reflect our commitment to building resilient, future-ready infrastructure. From easing urban challenges in Addu to creating a strategic transport link through GMCP, we are proud to be contributing to a new era of development in the Maldives.”
S.M. Viswamurthy, Project Director – GMCP, added “Executing this scale of marine construction under complex geotechnical and logistical conditions is a major milestone. It sets the stage for accelerated progress in the upcoming phases.”
