Afcons Infrastructure Ltd has accomplished a remarkable feat in Delhi Metro’s Phase-IV project by completing the longest tunneling drive between the Tughlakabad Airforce Launching Shaft and MaaAnandmayee Marg Station on the Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridor. Rajiv Dhankher, Director of Projects and Planning at Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), along with senior DMRC officials, marked a significant milestone in the Aerocity–Tughlakabad Corridor of Phase-IV of the Delhi Metro.

Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) AMRIT successfully completed a 2.65-km tunneling drive through mixed soil and hard rock strata. “This is the longest tunneling drive in Phase-IV of the Delhi Metro. The alignment was carefully planned to avoid heritage structures near Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, and frequent cutter replacements were required to navigate the challenging rock conditions,” said S. Paramasivan, Managing Director of Afcons Infrastructure Ltd.

The DC-07 package, a key segment of the 23.62 km Aerocity–Tughlakabad Corridor (Line-10), encompasses three underground stations—MaaAnandmayee Marg, Tughlakabad Railway Colony, and Tughlakabad Station. It features 11.26 km of tunneling, supported by a 223-meter ramp and a 119-meter cut-and-cover section.TBMAMRIT, measuring 105 meters in length, excavated the tunnel at an average depth of 16 meters, installing approximately 1,894 rings with an inner diameter of 5.8 meters. Two parallel tunnels are being constructed for up-and-down train movement along this stretch, with the second tunnel breakthrough anticipated in January 2025.

Afcons Infrastructure Ltd., part of the ShapoorjiPallonji Group, is spearheading the tunneling efforts. Known for delivering complex EPC projects globally, the company holds a strong reputation in marine, port, and bridge construction. Ranked among the world’s top 120 international contractors by the ENR survey, Afcons continues to be a leader in infrastructure innovation. This milestone underscores DMRC’s commitment to timely and efficient project execution while addressing technical and environmental challenges.
