Adani Group has deployed India’s first hydrogen-powered truck for mining logistics in Chhattisgarh. The vehicle, capable of transporting 40 tonnes of cargo across a distance of 200 kilometres, represents a milestone in the transition toward cleaner industrial transportation. Adani Enterprises Ltd the group’s flagship company, introduced the hydrogen fuel cell truck as part of a broader strategy to replace conventional diesel vehicles within its logistics network. The initiative is being executed in collaboration with both domestic and international energy technology firms and a leading automobile manufacturer. The hydrogen-powered truck features integrated smart technology and is equipped with three hydrogen storage tanks.

The vehicle will initially operate along the route between the Gare Pelma III coal block and a state-run power plant in Chhattisgarh. The first unit was officially flagged off by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai in Raipur.

The Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited has appointed Adani Enterprises as the mine developer and operator for the Gare Pelma III block through a competitive bidding process. The deployment aligns with the state’s emphasis on reducing carbon emissions and promoting environmentally responsible industrial practices.

According to Adani Enterprises, the introduction of hydrogen-powered trucks forms part of a wider decarbonisation strategy. The company is also incorporating sustainable technologies at its mining sites, including autonomous dozer push systems, solar energy integration, digital infrastructure, and tree relocation technologies to minimise environmental disruption.

This project is a collaborative effort between Adani Natural Resources (ANR) and Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL), both subsidiaries of Adani Enterprises. Hydrogen fuel cells will be supplied by ANIL, which is also active in green hydrogen production, as well as in the manufacturing of wind turbines, solar modules, and batteries.

Hydrogen, the most abundant element in the universe, emits only water vapour and heat when used as a fuel. Hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles offer performance comparable to diesel trucks in terms of range and load capacity, while significantly reducing noise and harmful emissions.

The use of hydrogen in mining logistics presents an opportunity to reduce India’s dependency on fossil fuels, lower emissions, and support national sustainability targets. Adani Natural Resources is also the first entity in Asia to implement Dozer Push Semi-Autonomous Technology, enhancing safety and operational efficiency. Adani Natural Resources operates across coal, minerals, and metals, and maintains a diversified portfolio including integrated resource management, iron ore, copper, aluminium
