Adani Total Gas Ltd (ATGL), a joint venture between Adani Group and TotalEnergies, has embarked on a groundbreaking green hydrogen production and blending pilot project. This innovative initiative, unveiled on Tuesday, leverages cutting-edge technologies to seamlessly blend green hydrogen (GH2) with natural gas, benefiting over 4,000 residential and commercial customers in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
The production of GH2 involves the electrolysis of water, utilizing electricity generated from renewable energy sources. While hydrogen blending is less carbon-intensive compared to burning gas, it maintains the same heating capabilities. The project is slated for commissioning by FY24-25, with the proportion of green hydrogen gradually increasing in the blend, potentially reaching up to 8% or more, contingent on regulatory approvals.
Post the successful completion of the pilot phase, the hydrogen-blended fuel will be incrementally introduced to broader segments of the city and other license areas under AGTL. Research indicates that an up to 8% hydrogen blend can lead to emissions reduction of up to 4%.
ATGL expressed its eagerness to collaborate with various stakeholders, including regulatory authorities, to share firsthand insights and foster the development of a hydrogen blending ecosystem within India’s city gas distribution framework. This collaborative effort aims to enhance understanding and knowledge concerning the operational aspects and compatibility of blended fuel with existing infrastructure.
Suresh P Manglani, Executive Director and CEO of Adani Total Gas Ltd., emphasized the company’s unwavering commitment to establishing an environmentally sustainable operation. He noted that the project symbolizes their continuous dedication to contributing to the development of national infrastructure, with the overarching goal of achieving energy independence for India by 2047. Manglani also emphasized that the project would contribute to reducing the carbon footprint, positioning ATGL as an active participant in the evolution of the industry and a driver of progress in sustainable energy solutions. By investing in innovative projects, the company strives to play a pivotal role in India’s journey towards energy efficiency by 2047.
The green hydrogen production and blending pilot project underscore ATGL’s commitment to advancing environmentally responsible operations and aligning with national objectives for sustainable infrastructure development. As the project unfolds, it is poised to set new benchmarks in the integration of green hydrogen into mainstream energy solutions, fostering a cleaner and more sustainable future for India’s energy landscape.
