ABB’s production site in Saltillo, Mexico, specializing in load centers and safety switches, has successfully reduced its carbon emissions by 80% in just two years. The facility has cut over 5,200 tons of CO₂e since its baseline reporting in 2022, thanks to the adoption of advanced energy management technologies and renewable energy solutions.

Key to this achievement is the use of ABB Ability™ Energy Manager, which optimizes energy consumption in real-time. The integration of over 1,000 photovoltaic (PV) panels generates 980 MWh of solar power annually, covering 10% of the facility’s electricity needs, with the remainder sourced from renewable projects via I-REC certificates. Sustainable transportation is also supported through ABB Terra AC wall box installations for EV charging.

The site’s sustainability journey began in 2019 with Clean Industry Certification, followed by energy-efficient upgrades like motion detectors, LED lighting, skylights, and external PV lighting. These measures have resulted in annual energy savings of 1,800 MWh by reducing reliance on artificial lighting during daytime operations.

Water conservation is another focus, with 60% of the facility’s water treated onsite and reused for landscaping. Located in Coahuila, a region facing significant water stress, ABB’s efforts align with local environmental goals while addressing critical resource challenges.

Mike Mustapha, President of ABB Electrification’s Smart Buildings Division, stated, “The Saltillo site exemplifies ABB’s ‘Mission to Zero’ initiative, combining smart technology with sustainability to achieve both cost efficiency and environmental goals. This reduction is equivalent to the annual electricity use of 947 homes and supports Coahuila’s regional emission reduction targets.”

ABB’s Mission to Zero™ program demonstrates its commitment to achieving net-zero operations through renewable energy, advanced energy management, and building automation. This scalable approach not only supports ABB’s own goals but also helps customers transition to low-carbon solutions, contributing to a more sustainable future.
