ABB has launched the LV Titanium Variable Speed Motor, offering a combination of energy-efficient motor technology and variable speed drive (VSD) in a single, compact, and customizable solution. This innovative platform helps industries reduce energy consumption, lower costs, and minimize carbon emissions.
The LV Titanium provides an easy, cost-effective way to achieve IE5 Ultra-Premium efficiency in applications such as pumps, compressors, and many others. Designed as a direct replacement for existing direct-online (DOL) induction motors, this Variable Speed Motor offers a seamless upgrade path to VSD technology with a quick return on investment.
The LV Titanium is not just a traditional motor with a drive added on; it’s a fully integrated system. The drive module is engineered specifically for optimal performance alongside a high-efficiency permanent magnet (PM) motor. Its sleek design, featuring an axial drive mounted at the motor’s end, saves space and makes the platform particularly suitable for vertical pump applications. The motor’s design also ensures quieter operation. Another key advantage of the LV Titanium is its ability to operate over a wide range of speeds and torque, delivering high torque even at low speeds, which is essential for many industrial applications.
Stefan Floeck, Division President of IEC Low Voltage Motors at ABB, said, “We developed the LV Titanium in close collaboration with our customers who wanted energy savings and reduced emissions without the hassle of complicated installations. This Variable Speed Motor offers high performance in a compact, user-friendly package that draws on our decades of experience in the field.”
Thanks to its plug-and-play design, the LV Titanium doesn’t require commissioning. The motor and drive are factory-configured and optimized to work together right out of the box, making installation quick and simple. No special electrical rooms or specially trained personnel are needed, which streamlines the setup process.
The motor also features an intuitive control panel with both analog and digital inputs and outputs (I/O), along with a built-in PLC. Its connectivity options, including the Modbus RTU communications protocol, make integration with PLCs and other control devices straightforward.
Due to its compact design and high power density, the LV Titanium is typically two frame sizes smaller than comparable induction motors, making it ideal for space-constrained environments or for replacing outdated, inefficient motors.
Energy savings with the LV Titanium are evident when compared to a traditional, fixed-speed motor. In a typical 7.5 kW centrifugal pumping application—one of the primary use cases for the IE5 Variable Speed Motor—annual savings on electricity costs can reach ₹1.8 lakh, assuming an energy cost of ₹9/kWh in India. Additionally, switching to the LV Titanium results in an estimated reduction of around 14,200 kg of CO2 emissions per year, based on the average carbon intensity of 708 g/kWh.
The LV Titanium is currently available in sizes starting from 1.5 kW and will soon be expanded to support applications up to 30 kW across a wide range of industries, from water treatment to food and beverage production. The motor is available off-the-shelf but can also be customized to meet specific customer needs.
With its exceptional efficiency, adaptability, durability, and compact design, the LV Titanium is set to transform industrial operations globally, offering a forward-thinking solution that addresses both current and future industry challenges.
