ABB has signed an agreement with Fervo Energy, a Texas-based pioneer in enhanced geothermal systems, to provide advanced motor control and electrification equipment for the Cape Station geothermal project in southwest Utah, USA. Cape Station is set to begin delivering carbon-free electricity to the grid in 2026 and is expected to become the world’s largest next-generation geothermal development by installed capacity, marking a major milestone for renewable baseload power in the United States.

Cape Station will deploy enhanced geothermal techniques, including horizontal drilling in geothermal reservoirs, allowing multiple wells to be drilled from a single pad. The approach lowers surface impact, reduces drilling risk, and opens access to geothermal resources that were previously difficult to tap—expanding the role of geothermal as stable, always-on clean power. The project is scheduled to deliver first power in 2026, with plans to add 400 MW thereafter, reaching a total of 500 MW, enough to power about 355,000 US homes annually.

Tim Latimer, CEO and Co-Founder of Fervo Energy, said, “ABB is recognized globally for delivering reliable, high-performance electrification and motor control solutions for critical energy projects. Their ability to advise, develop and execute at scale made ABB the clear choice again for the Cape Station project.”

Under the agreement, ABB will supply a full package of medium-voltage motor control equipment, including more than 80 drives to manage high-horsepower critical equipment. ABB’s scope also includes medium-voltage motors and generators, low-voltage motor control centers, medium-voltage switchgear, and prefabricated eHouses that will house the well-pad drive systems and supporting electrical infrastructure.

Brandon Spencer, President, ABB Motion, said, “Working with clean energy developers like Fervo Energy strengthens our commitment to broaden the impact of dependable renewable power using electrification technologies available today. We are particularly encouraged by Cape Station’s potential contribution to a more sustainable energy mix.”

Through this collaboration, ABB and Fervo Energy aim to strengthen grid reliability while supporting rising demand for domestic, firm and renewable energy supply. ABB is a global leader in electrification and automation, advancing a more sustainable and resource-efficient future.
