ABB has signed an agreement to acquire Specialtrasfo SpA, an Italian manufacturer of specialized medium-voltage transformers, in a move aimed at strengthening its industrial electrification and integrated powertrain solutions business. The acquisition will enhance ABB’s ability to deliver advanced transformer technologies for high-demand industrial applications while reinforcing supply chain resilience for critical power conversion systems. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. The deal is expected to be completed during the third quarter of 2026, subject to customary regulatory approvals.
Founded in 1946, Specialtrasfo is headquartered in Agrate Brianza near Milan and operates three manufacturing facilities across northern Italy. The company employs approximately 130 people and generated revenues of around 80 million euros in 2025. ABB currently accounts for nearly half of Specialtrasfo’s business through long-standing commercial collaboration between the two companies.
Specialtrasfo specialises in custom-engineered medium-voltage transformers, including converter and rectifier transformers used in energy, marine, mining, metals, offshore, and industrial processing applications. These systems play a critical role in efficient power conversion, industrial control, and reliable operational performance across heavy-duty industrial environments.
Following the completion of the transaction, the business will become part of ABB’s Motion High Power division, further expanding ABB’s integrated offering of motors, drives, and transformer technologies. Juha Koskela said the long-standing relationship between ABB and Specialtrasfo reflects the strong technical expertise and product reliability developed by the Italian company over decades.
He stated that the acquisition will expand ABB’s specialized transformer portfolio while improving flexibility and responsiveness in serving industries that require integrated high-performance powertrain solutions. By combining high-power motors, drives, and transformers within a single portfolio, ABB aims to simplify project execution and support customers with more efficient electrification systems.
The acquisition comes amid rising global demand for electrical infrastructure driven by industrial electrification, renewable energy expansion, digital infrastructure growth, and increasing power requirements from artificial intelligence and data centers. According to projections from the International Energy Agency (IEA), worldwide electricity demand is expected to double by 2050, creating substantial demand for transformers and advanced power conversion technologies. ABB believes the acquisition will strengthen its position in addressing these evolving market requirements through greater vertical integration and manufacturing capability.
ABB continues to focus on technologies that support energy efficiency, automation, and industrial sustainability across sectors worldwide. The company operates in electrification and automation technologies with a workforce of approximately 110,000 employees globally and more than 140 years of industrial engineering experience.
