ABB has reached an agreement to acquire BrightLoop, a French company specializing in advanced power electronics. This move is designed to enhance ABB’s electrification efforts in industrial mobility and marine propulsion. The acquisition will bolster ABB’s ability to offer high-performance, compact, and robust power conversion systems suited for demanding industries such as construction, mining, and marine transportation. The deal is expected to close by the third quarter of 2025, pending regulatory approvals. Financial details were not disclosed.
As part of the transaction, ABB will initially acquire a 93% stake in BrightLoop, with plans to purchase the remaining 7% in 2028. BrightLoop’s current management team will continue to lead the business under ABB’s ownership.
Founded in 2010 and based in Paris, BrightLoop has about 90 employees and posted revenues of roughly 16 million euros in 2024. The company has grown rapidly as the shift toward electrification accelerates across its primary industries. BrightLoop offers a range of high- and low-voltage DC/DC converters that handle bidirectional power flows efficiently, compactly, and scalably. The company’s technology was first developed for motorsports, and is now used in all vehicles competing in the ABB FIA Formula E championship. This proven track record underscores the reliability and high efficiency of its power conversion solutions. Today, its technology is also used in sectors like off-highway transportation, marine, aerospace, hydrogen mobility, and defense.
BrightLoop’s converters are designed to perform in extreme environments where space, weight, and reliability are crucial. This makes them ideal for industrial and marine electrification, improving energy efficiency, reducing fuel consumption, and lowering maintenance and emissions. These benefits lead to lower overall operating costs for vehicles and vessels. BrightLoop’s use of advanced semiconductors, such as silicon carbide and gallium nitride, places it at the forefront of high-efficiency power electronics.
“This acquisition represents a significant step in our goal to make transportation industries more efficient and sustainable,” said Edgar Keller, President of ABB’s Traction division. “BrightLoop’s expertise and advanced power technology will allow us to provide even greater value to customers transitioning to cleaner, smarter energy systems.”
Florent Liffran, CEO of BrightLoop, expressed excitement about the partnership: “We’re thrilled to join ABB. With our combined passion for power conversion and ABB’s global reach, we are well-positioned to support the electrification of large-scale production. Together, we’ll drive innovation and deliver superior products to fast-growing markets.”
Integrating BrightLoop’s technology will allow ABB to grow its installed base, enhance digital capabilities, and accelerate innovation across its electrification portfolio. ABB plans to maintain BrightLoop’s engineering and manufacturing base in France while expanding operations worldwide. By combining their strengths, both companies aim to further the energy transition with intelligent and sustainable power conversion solutions.
