ABB has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Argent LNG to collaborate on automation and electrical solutions for a new liquefaction facility at Port Fourchon in Louisiana, USA. Scheduled to be operational by 2030, the facility will enhance U.S. LNG export capabilities, contributing to global energy security and supporting the role of LNG as a transitional fuel.
The MoU outlines plans for ABB to develop an integrated automation and electrical infrastructure, including digital solutions like cybersecurity and data collection. The collaboration aims to design a system architecture that maximizes operational performance and efficiency while ensuring compliance with emissions regulations.
The facility will utilize modular liquefaction technology, which focuses on reducing emissions and ensuring reliability. ABB’s support will include the use of its Ability™ System 800xA® integrated controls platform, prefabricated eHouse design, and analyzer system solutions. Convenient access to existing pipelines will streamline transportation costs and logistics for natural gas feedstock delivery.
Nathan Tungseth, Senior Vice President for LNG at ABB Energy Industries, commented, “We are proud to support Argent LNG in enhancing the U.S.’s position as a leading LNG exporter. Our solutions are designed to maximize plant efficiency while reducing energy use, contributing to a lower carbon future.”
The project will feature an initial capacity of 10 million tons per annum (mtpa), with a second phase planned to add up to 15 mtpa. A smaller-scale plant will also be developed to supply LNG for next-generation offshore supply vessels in the Gulf of Mexico.
Jonathan Bass, CEO of Argent LNG, emphasized the project’s global impact: “This facility will provide affordable, cleaner energy to those who need it most. Our partnership with ABB aligns with our commitment to cost-effective and sustainable engineering and construction, utilizing proven technologies to reach final investment decisions (FID).”
ABB’s Process Automation division will lead the project, leveraging its expertise in automating, electrifying, and digitalizing industrial operations to enhance sustainability and resource efficiency. With over 20,000 employees, ABB Process Automation supports various sectors, improving operational performance and safety. This partnership exemplifies ABB’s commitment to driving innovation for a more resource-efficient future.
