ABB has unveiled its first Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for the AC 800M series of controllers, marking a significant development in industrial automation. With this move, ABB becomes the first company to release an externally verified EPD for industrial controllers used in distributed control systems (DCS). This declaration is an essential step for industrial customers striving to meet both regulatory standards and corporate sustainability objectives.

An EPD is a standardized report detailing the environmental impact of a product throughout its lifecycle. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) conducted for the AC 800M controllers to develop the Type III EPD adhered to ISO standards and referenced EN standards for electrical and electronic products.

The AC 800M controllers are central to the ABB Ability™ System 800xA® distributed control system and Compact Product Suite. They are designed to provide flexible and scalable process control, offering reliable performance and high availability for critical industries such as energy, chemicals, power generation, water, pharmaceuticals, and metals.

Stefan Basenach, Senior Vice President of Process Automation Technology at ABB, commented, “Our goal is to help customers operate more efficiently and sustainably. By providing transparent information like this EPD, we support our customers in meeting regulatory standards and achieving their sustainability targets. This EPD is an important step toward greater transparency in industrial automation.”

The EPD includes information for all nine models in the AC 800M family. These models come equipped with dual Ethernet ports and IP20 protection, complying with major international environmental regulations, including those related to hazardous substances, chemical safety, and electronic waste.
