ABB has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with EVE Energy Co., Ltd., a leading global lithium battery cell producer, to support the establishment of new, sustainable lithium battery manufacturing facilities around the world. This partnership aims to enhance efficiency, adhere to project timelines, and boost overall productivity and profitability by leveraging EVE’s “Global Manufacturing, Global Delivery, Global Cooperation” model.
As EVE plans to launch new factories internationally in the near future, ABB will collaborate on the design and construction of these facilities, providing its expertise in greenfield battery manufacturing. ABB’s support will focus on integrating electrical, instrumentation, control, and digital (EICD) systems, Adaptive Execution™, and efficient ongoing operations. The agreement also includes joint research and development (R&D) efforts and explores opportunities for supplying battery cells, modules, and packs to ABB.
With over 23 years in lithium battery innovation, EVE Energy has a strong presence in the Internet of Things (IoT) and energy sectors. The company’s product range includes primary lithium batteries, small lithium-ion batteries, power batteries, and energy storage batteries. EVE is currently constructing its first European facility in Hungary to cater to the automotive sector and has plans for additional sites to expand its footprint in China and the US.
The lithium battery manufacturing industry is rapidly evolving to meet rising clean energy demands while addressing challenges such as improving quality, enhancing throughput, managing costs, and ensuring safety and environmental responsibility. ABB’s Plant Optimization Methodology aims to address these challenges from the outset, optimizing plant design, equipment, and operations.
Steven Chen, SVP of EVE Energy and CEO of EVE Energy Storage, commented, “Our partnership with ABB will significantly enhance the efficiency and safety of our new battery factories. We look forward to collaborating on designing and implementing solutions that advance sustainable energy production.”
Staffan Sodergard, Global Business Unit Manager for Battery Manufacturing at ABB, added, “Addressing the need for reliable battery supplies is critical. Expanding global manufacturing capabilities for high-quality lithium batteries is essential for this energy transition. EVE’s commitment to optimizing operations at new sites aligns perfectly with ABB’s expertise in delivering efficient, cost-effective solutions.”
It’s integration of EICD technologies ensures optimized solutions throughout project execution, focusing on worker safety and process efficiency. It’s Adaptive Execution approach streamlines both physical and digital activities, delivering standardized global projects while minimizing capital expenditures.
It’s comprehensive solutions span the entire battery manufacturing value chain, including materials sourcing, production, and recycling. Tools such as ABB Ability™ Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM) and ABB Ability™ Energy and Asset Manager will help EVE optimize production, reduce energy consumption, and maintain high-quality standards.
ABB’s Process Automation business, with around 20,000 employees, is dedicated to automating, electrifying, and digitalizing industrial operations. The company’s solutions enhance performance and safety across process, hybrid, and maritime industries, supporting a sustainable and resource-efficient future.
