ABB has announced a strategic partnership with Toronto-based energy management startup Edgecom Energy. Edgecom’s innovative platform leverages artificial intelligence to help industrial and commercial users optimize power usage and reduce demand peaks. It is the first platform in the market to integrate a generative AI copilot, enhancing user experience and delivering actionable insights for energy efficiency.

Through ABB Electrification Ventures, the company has made a minority investment in Edgecom, further strengthening its commitment to advancing sustainable, digital energy management solutions. Edgecom was also a winner in ABB’s 2024 Startup Challenge, showcasing its potential to address critical energy challenges.

As the International Energy Agency stresses the urgent need to double energy efficiency progress by 2030 to meet net-zero goals, ABB’s collaboration with Edgecom aims to deliver innovative solutions for reducing energy consumption and costs. The partnership will see ABB’s Smart Power division working closely with Edgecom to develop AI-powered tools for customers in North America.

Massimiliano Cifalitti, President of ABB’s Smart Power division, stated, “Collaborations like this are central to ABB Electrification’s AI strategy. Edgecom demonstrates how generative AI can simplify complex data and create actionable value for businesses, aligning with ABB’s vision of scalable and interoperable solutions for energy management.”

Edgecom’s AI Energy Copilot transforms data collected from power networks into actionable recommendations, offering strategies to lower energy bills or reduce environmental impact. This adaptability allows customers to align energy usage with their goals, unlocking savings and driving sustainable operations.

Behdad Bahrami, CEO and Co-Founder of Edgecom, emphasized the importance of the partnership, saying, “ABB’s support validates our mission to deliver cost-saving and emission-reducing solutions to large energy users. Together, we’re driving the energy transition with innovative tools for a more sustainable industrial future.”

Mehdi Parvizi, CTO and Co-Founder of Edgecom, added, “Generative AI enables personalized strategies that optimize energy-intensive assets, integrate with market programs, and improve overall efficiency, paving the way for smarter energy decisions.”

With this investment, ABB Electrification Ventures has now partnered with 15 companies, contributing €80 million in investments since 2021. Across ABB Ventures, over $450 million has been invested in 70 startups in electrification and automation sectors since 2010.

ABB, a global leader in electrification and automation, combines engineering expertise and digital innovation to enhance efficiency, sustainability, and productivity across industries. With over 140 years of history and a workforce of 105,000 employees, ABB continues to empower industries worldwide to meet the challenges of the energy transition.
