ABB has become an investor in Arctial, joining a coalition of companies undertaking detailed feasibility studies for the Greentop low-carbon aluminium smelter project in Finland. This effort is expected to play a key role in strengthening Europe’s materials supply chain. Financial terms were not made public. The agreement was finalized in early 2025.
Arctial is committed to evaluating the potential for a new production facility in the Kokkola and Kronoby areas on Finland’s west coast, considering commercial viability, environmental impact, social aspects, and technical challenges. This project would mark the first new primary aluminium plant in continental Europe in more than three decades, responding to rising global demand from sectors such as automotive, electronics, packaging, aerospace, and construction. The team plans to utilize low-carbon energy sources from both existing and emerging renewable infrastructure, working closely with partners from local and international industries.
As a leading global technology provider, ABB will oversee the assessment of electrification and automation components, including the integration of high power rectifiers, high voltage switchgear, transformers, and substations. The company’s team will contribute to front-end engineering design, early works planning, budgeting, scheduling, and safety risk analysis. The aim is to establish a facility that is energy-efficient, resource-conscious, dependable, and secure.
“Collaboration across industrial supply chains is fundamental to our approach,” stated Torbjörn Sternsjö, CEO of Arctial. “Our partnerships bring critical strategic insights, broaden expertise, and expand networks. We are eager to see the outcomes we can achieve with our investment collaborators.”
“By joining Arctial’s low-carbon aluminium project early on, we are committed to providing both funding and decades of industry know-how,” commented Joachim Braun, Division President of ABB Process Industries. “We recognize the significant influence this project could have on European supply chains affecting industries and consumers alike. We are confident that our technological capabilities will help bring this initiative to fruition.” Arctial plans to reach a final investment decision on the manufacturing site between 2026 and 2027, following a thorough evaluation process, with the feasibility study being a key preliminary step.
