ABB has introduced a new service-based model for battery energy storage, offering a no-capital-expenditure route for companies to enhance energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and improve grid resilience. The Battery Energy Storage Systems-as-a-Service (BESS-as-a-Service) platform provides an end-to-end solution encompassing hardware, software, deployment, maintenance, and optimization under a quarterly service fee model.

This new offering is ABB’s first in a line of advanced service solutions aimed at accelerating clean energy transition across industries. It removes cost-related barriers to adopting energy storage and aligns with projected global storage demand, which the International Energy Agency estimates will increase sixfold by 2030.

BESS-as-a-Service is suited for sectors such as logistics, data centres, transportation, and commercial real estate. The system is technology-agnostic, allowing users to incorporate various battery technologies while staying current with innovation. It also includes built-in performance guarantees and coverage for energy trading brokerage fees, offering companies access to new revenue through the sale of surplus power.

ABB manages the full life cycle of each installation, enabling businesses to improve energy resilience and cut peak energy charges without diverting resources from their core operations. The platform is structured as a predictable operating expense rather than a capital investment, offering financial clarity in today’s energy markets.

Stuart Thompson, President of ABB’s Electrification Service Division, commented, “In an energy environment defined by volatility and complexity, BESS-as-a-Service provides a strategic advantage. It gives businesses immediate access to advanced storage solutions without the burden of capital expenditure, while also improving energy reliability and unlocking economic opportunities.”

Feasibility assessments are currently underway with potential clients. These evaluations determine the financial viability of deploying the system and ensure immediate value upon implementation. ABB has built a partner ecosystem around BESS-as-a-Service, incorporating energy monitoring, data analytics, and financial modeling expertise to maximize benefits for users.

This service launch forms part of ABB’s broader commitment to support a resource-efficient global energy system. With more than 140 years of industrial innovation and a workforce of approximately 110,000 employees, ABB continues to advance electrification and automation technologies to support sustainable industrial performance.
