ABB has expanded its SP4 motor lineup with a new range of models featuring integrated shaft grounding. These new additions are engineered to provide advanced bearing protection in variable speed drive (VSD) environments—helping customers reduce maintenance costs, extend motor life, and improve efficiency by up to 20%.

This marks the fourth phase of the SP4 platform, continuing ABB’s drive to offer reliable, energy-saving motor technology across a wide range of industrial applications. Built on the trusted SP4 design, these new models offer high efficiency and superior protection in a rolled steel frame—an industry-first combination.

The latest SP4 motors are designed with a built-in shaft grounding ring that provides critical protection for motor bearings. By preventing harmful electrical discharge, the feature helps reduce bearing wear, extend service life, and minimize costly downtime in demanding applications.

These motors also deliver high-efficiency performance, meeting NEMA Super Premium (IE4) standards without relying on magnets or rare-earth materials. This design not only reduces overall energy consumption but also boosts operational efficiency, translating into significant cost savings for end users.

Flexibility is another advantage of the SP4 range. Available in 2, 4, and 6-pole designs, the lineup includes models from 1 to 10 HP (TEFC) and 1 to 20 HP (ODP). Both footed and footless options are offered, making replacements straightforward across DOL and VSD-controlled systems.

Durability and long service life are core strengths of these motors. Running at cooler operating temperatures, they reduce stress on internal components and deliver consistent performance over time. To reinforce reliability, the motors are backed by a four-year warranty.

By combining high efficiency with shaft-grounding capability in a rolled steel frame, these motors are ideally suited for HVAC systems, water treatment plants, manufacturing facilities, and other industries that rely heavily on VSD-driven equipment. This balance of performance and protection makes them a dependable choice across multiple applications.

The SP4 series builds on proven technology. Previous releases featured cast iron models for rugged environments alongside rolled steel versions for general-purpose use. Each variant is available in standard or C-face designs, with both footed and footless mounting options, giving customers the flexibility to match existing setups.

According to Brandon Canclini, Global Product Manager at ABB, the SP4 motors eliminate the need to choose between efficiency and bearing protection. With both built into one solution, users gain a cost-effective and reliable upgrade path. The design reduces energy losses by an average of 20% compared to traditional motors, even when operating as standalone DOL units, while achieving even greater benefits when paired with VSDs.

Engineered to meet the demands of modern industry, SP4 motors are ideal for fans, pumps, compressors, and conveyors across a wide range of sectors. Since their introduction in 2024, the portfolio has expanded to include cast iron models from 25 to 300 HP for heavy-duty applications and rolled steel models from ¼ to 20 HP for lighter, general-purpose needs.

With over 300 million motor-driven systems operating worldwide, and electric motors accounting for nearly 45% of global electricity use, high-efficiency solutions like the SP4 range play an essential role in lowering energy costs and reducing environmental impact. These motors not only meet today’s efficiency requirements but also set a higher benchmark for sustainable industrial performance.

As electricity demand grows due to urbanization, new technology, and global population trends, energy-efficient motors will play a key role in sustainability efforts. ABB supports this shift through product innovation, circular design principles, and investment in long-term solutions that promote reuse, recycling, and reduced waste.
