ABB India is scaling up its manufacturing capabilities with a strategic investment of over ₹140 crore to expand and upgrade its Low Voltage (LV) motors plant. This development also marks the official rollout of its new IE5 ultra-premium efficiency motors—positioning India as a pivotal center for advanced motor technology and global innovation.

“This investment reflects more than just capacity expansion—it signals our long-term vision for India as a major manufacturing hub on the global stage,” said Stefan Floeck, President – IEC Low Voltage Motors, ABB. “As demand for energy-efficient motors grows, we are focused on delivering solutions that drive performance while supporting sustainability.”

The IE5 motor series, the first of its kind in India using induction motor technology, sets a new benchmark in energy efficiency. With power ratings ranging from 45 kW to 1000 kW, these motors are designed without rare-earth elements, offering robust performance even in the most demanding industrial settings.

They are optimized for Indian conditions and compatible with both Direct-On-Line (DOL) and Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) operations, making them ideal for a wide array of industries, including metals, cement, textiles, pharmaceuticals, food & beverage, and paper. Compared to IE3 motors, ABB’s IE5 range offers up to 40% lower energy losses—resulting in faster return on investment, lower total cost of ownership, and extended service life.

“These motors bring together the proven reliability of induction technology with the highest efficiency standards—without depending on rare-earth materials,” noted Sanjeev Arora, President – Motion Business & IEC Low Voltage Motors, ABB India. “They are engineered specifically for Indian industrial environments and support our broader goal of helping the country move toward cleaner, more sustainable manufacturing.”

This milestone reinforces ABB’s 75-year legacy in India and underscores its continued commitment to advancing energy-efficient technologies. ABB’s broader mission is to help industries achieve higher performance while enhancing productivity, sustainability, and operational safety through cutting-edge electrification and automation solutions.

Globally, ABB has a history spanning over 140 years and employs approximately 110,000 people. The company’s shares are traded on the SIX Swiss Exchange (ABBN) and Nasdaq Stockholm (ABB). ABB Motion, the division behind this latest initiative, plays a central role in enabling energy-efficient and circular solutions through its portfolio of digitally enabled motors, drives, and services, serving industrial sectors across more than 100 countries. By innovating continuously, ABB supports industries in their drive to become cleaner, leaner, and more efficient—empowering them to outperform in a rapidly evolving world.
