ABB India has been awarded a significant contract to provide electrification and automation systems for the advanced steel cold rolling mill (CRM) of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) in Hazira, Gujarat. The contract was placed through John Cockerill India Limited (JCIL), the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for the project. AM/NS India, a joint venture between global steel giants ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, aims to enhance its downstream operations with the establishment of the new CRM.
Under the contract, ABB India will deliver advanced electrification and automation systems, including the highly regarded ABB Ability™ System 800xA distributed control system (DCS) and associated equipment and components. These cutting-edge technologies will enhance energy efficiency, optimize zinc consumption, and improve corrosion resistance throughout the steel production process. By implementing these systems, AM/NS India aims to achieve greater sustainability and meet its environmental objectives at the Hazira plant.
Dilip Oommen, Chief Executive Officer of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India, stated, “Our goal is to help create smarter steels for brighter futures, brighter futures for people and the planet. To do this, we place safety, innovation, and technology at the heart of our manufacturing operations and product development, and ABB’s technology will support us in this.” He further added, “The new processing lines are designed to produce new-age value-added steel, embedding the most demanding quality standards. This expansion will help us meet the growing demand for high-end steel while also enhancing our portfolio of value-added, sustainable steel.”

John Cockerill Industry’s Project Director, Frédéric Midy, expressed his pride in being chosen by AM/NS India, stating, “We are proud of having been chosen by such a first-class steelmaker for the supply of two highly automated processing lines, combining cutting-edge equipment with integrated quality control and enhanced energy efficiency. The fight against climate change is part of John Cockerill’s mission. This new contract will not only enable us to accompany AM/NS India on its journey towards sustainability but will also contribute to the country’s low-carbon economy ambitions.”
Vinod C, Local Division Manager, Process Industries at ABB, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating, “Working with JCIL on this milestone project will support AM/NS India in developing one of the most sustainable, efficient, and modern steel operations.”
The new CRM, equipped with advanced processing lines, is scheduled to be commissioned in 2024. AM/NS India, as a leading integrated flat carbon steel producer in India, boasts a crude steel capacity of 9 million metric tons per annum and state-of-the-art downstream facilities. It offers a diverse range of flat steel products, including value-added steel, and possesses a pellet capacity of 20 million metric tons.
