Japanese paper manufacturer Kami Shoji Co., Ltd. has integrated ABB’s L&W Fiber Tester Plus, an advanced automated fiber testing solution, to improve its cellulose nanofiber (CNF) paper production. This cutting-edge technology allows for fast and precise fiber quality analysis, which is critical for Kami Shoji’s defibration process—a method that separates wood fibers before they enter the paper machine.
Known for its cost-effective approach, Kami Shoji’s unique press method speeds up the dewatering process in CNF paper production, resulting in a product with the same durability and strength as chemically defibrated CNF paper, even in oily conditions. This CNF paper offers elastic deformation, setting it apart from regular chemical CNF paper, and is anticipated to be used in various applications, including insulation, structural materials, and soundproofing.
The challenge of producing mechanical defibration CNF paper requires precise fiber morphology analysis, which is now made easier with ABB’s L&W Fiber Tester Plus. Capable of analyzing 20,000 fibers in just 10 minutes, the device provides essential data on fiber morphology, including measurements such as fiber length, width, and fibril perimeter. This process was previously too time-consuming with manual methods using optical microscopes.
Dr. Shosaku Kashiwada, Acting General Manager of Development at Kami Shoji, highlighted the significant value that the L&W Fiber Tester Plus brings to their research, providing critical insights that guide their CNF paper development. ABB Japan’s Local Division Manager, Hiromichi Yoda, emphasized that this tool is also being utilized by public institutions in Japan’s paper-producing regions, enhancing research and innovation in the pulp and paper industry.
The L&W Fiber Tester Plus uses advanced image analysis and offers a range of measurements, including fiber coarseness, shape, and deformation. This technology supports Kami Shoji in optimizing operations, improving quality control, and increasing production efficiency.
ABB, a leader in electrification and automation, is dedicated to creating resource-efficient industrial processes. The company’s Process Automation division plays a key role in automating and digitalizing operations, supporting industries to enhance both productivity and sustainability.
