ABB has broadened its SD200 841 severe-duty motor range with the introduction of higher-power models capable of delivering up to 500 horsepower, enabling industrial operators to address increasingly demanding process requirements while maintaining compliance with the latest IEEE 841 standards. The expansion introduces larger 5000-series NEMA frame sizes, extending the platform’s horsepower range from 75 HP to 500 HP. The addition significantly increases ABB’s coverage for heavy industrial applications, providing customers with a single motor platform capable of serving a wider variety of equipment across challenging operating environments.
Designed specifically for severe-duty service, the SD200 841 motor series is engineered to meet or exceed IEEE 841-2021 requirements covering efficiency, reliability, construction quality, variable-speed operation and operational longevity. The enhanced product line supports industries where equipment reliability directly impacts productivity, safety and maintenance costs.
The motors feature IP56 protection, allowing dependable operation in environments exposed to moisture, dust and contaminants. Class H insulation provides additional thermal capacity, helping extend motor life in high-temperature conditions commonly found in process industries. Bearing isolators installed on both drive and non-drive ends protect internal components from contamination, reducing maintenance requirements and enhancing equipment reliability.
Performance is further strengthened through low vibration levels of 0.06 IPS, supporting smoother operation in high-torque applications while minimizing wear on connected equipment. Every motor is supplied with a detailed IEEE 841 test report and is backed by a five-year warranty, underscoring ABB’s confidence in product durability and long-term performance.
Installation and maintenance have also been simplified. The larger frame motors include factory-installed terminal blocks as standard equipment, replacing traditional flying leads. This design enhancement improves connection integrity, streamlines commissioning and provides easier access during maintenance activities. An oversized conduit box and field-modifiable construction offer additional flexibility for industrial operators.
The expanded SD200 841 lineup is intended for use in petroleum and chemical processing facilities, pulp and paper operations, mining and aggregate sites, cement manufacturing plants and industrial pumping and conveying systems. These sectors require motors capable of delivering continuous, high-horsepower performance under demanding operating conditions.
By expanding the horsepower range within a single IEEE 841-compliant platform, ABB enables customers to standardize motor specifications across a broader range of applications. This approach can simplify inventory management, reduce maintenance complexity and improve long-term asset reliability.
