ABB has unveiled plans to invest more than CA$130 million (approximately US$100 million) to boost its research, development, and manufacturing capabilities in Canada. The investment will support the consolidation and expansion of the company’s operations in the province of Quebec, establishing a new state-of-the-art facility in Montreal’s South Shore region. This move is aimed at meeting growing demand for advanced energy distribution and grid resilience solutions across key sectors including utilities, renewable energy, transportation, infrastructure, and residential developments.
The upcoming 340,000 square-foot site will replace ABB’s current operations in Iberville and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, integrating them into a single, advanced manufacturing and R&D hub. This new facility will be over one-third larger than the two existing sites combined and will feature next-generation production automation and digital technologies. Over 600 employees from various functions—engineering, R&D, testing, production, and support—will transition to the new location, with additional hiring anticipated as operations expand.
“This investment reflects our long-term commitment to growth in Canada,” said Khalid Mandri, President of ABB Installation Products. “As industries shift toward greater electrification and demand for resilient, efficient power infrastructure increases, our new facility will play a critical role in supporting those needs. This is part of our broader strategy, which also includes recent investments in the United States and Europe.”
Scheduled to begin operations by mid-2027, the new facility will integrate energy-saving technologies and cleaner systems, reducing carbon emissions by more than 95 percent compared to the current sites. It will utilize locally sourced materials—including 100 percent Canadian steel and aluminum—supporting ABB’s focus on sustainability and domestic manufacturing.
The initiative has received financial support from Investissement Québec, with a contribution of CA$16 million (US$12 million) toward the project. Currently, more than 80 percent of ABB Installation Products sold in Canada are produced or assembled domestically, reflecting the company’s strong local presence and supply chain integration.
This marks ABB’s most significant investment in Canada to date. Over the past ten years, the company has committed approximately US$275 million toward strengthening its Canadian operations, including facility upgrades, new automation capabilities, and workforce development programs. The new site reinforces ABB’s dedication to advancing industrial performance while supporting a cleaner, more efficient future.
