In just three days, ABB has completed large-scale remote commissioning of winder drives, by upgrading and commissioning PM5 installations at ITC’s Paperboards and Specialty Papers Division mill in south-central India. This project included upgrading the mill’s complete winder drive system to ABB’s latest ACS880 drives, AC motors, AC800M controller, and process panel, also checked for installation and usability.
After researching details of an existing machine, thorough task planning, and various checks on the safety aspects were done to ensure ABB’s team completed the commissioning in just three days. Engineers from ITC conducted installation check, hardware, and I/O (input/output) check, and observed field challenges. Team feedback also informed the system to be user-friendly.

“Our ABB team mobilized quickly and used its remote expertise to complete this large-scale commissioning project, overseeing all drive parameterization, controller and human-machine interface (HMI) programming, testing and commissioning,” says Sanath Kumar, Vice President of ABB India who is also the Global Product Manager for Paper Machine Drives and Head of Engineering for Process Industries.
Because of the drive upgrade, ITC will get benefit from more accurate winder controls, which include inertia compensation calculation, loss compensation, accurate load share, and tension, while experiencing higher operating speeds, but improved uptime and reliability. ITC gave feedback of this as improved runnability and reliability, with remote commissioning to help reduce unnecessary downtime.
