ABB has announced a partnership with Stadler US to promote sustainable rail transportation in the United States. This collaboration will see ABB supply traction converters and Pro Series Traction Batteries for new trainsets operated by Metra in Illinois and Caltrans in California, representing a significant step forward in the push for greener rail solutions in the US.

Metra, set to be one of the first US rail operators to use fully battery-powered trainsets, has placed an order for eight two-car trainsets. These will operate throughout Chicago and be equipped with ABB’s Pro 8C batteries and CC750 DC traction converters. ABB’s high-efficiency traction converters are designed to optimize trainset performance, while the battery system will help Metra cut CO2 emissions.

In a groundbreaking move, Caltrans has signed a contract for hydrogen-powered passenger trains in North America, with a fleet of 10 trainsets. ABB will supply the Pro 8C traction batteries, along with CC750 and CC400 DC traction converters for each of the trains. The traction converter for fuel cell integration will be key in providing efficient propulsion for the hydrogen-powered trains, contributing to lower energy consumption and emissions.

The components for these trainsets will be assembled and tested at ABB’s Traction factory in Mechanicsville, Virginia, where nearly 100 skilled workers are employed. Since 2010, ABB has invested over $14 billion in expanding its US operations, enhancing plant infrastructure, and advancing technology.

Edgar Keller, President of ABB’s Traction division, expressed, “Our partnership with Stadler highlights our commitment to advancing sustainable transportation solutions. By leveraging our cutting-edge technology and local manufacturing, we are accelerating the shift to cleaner rail transport.”

Martin Ritter, CEO of Stadler’s North America division, added, “Integrating ABB’s advanced traction batteries and converters into our trainsets enhances the efficiency and reliability of our fleets while supporting a future of state-of-the-art, sustainable transit.”
