ABB and Škoda Group have announced their first-ever collaboration to enhance the Czech railway system with new battery-electric trains. As part of this partnership, ABB will supply its innovative Traction Battery Pro Series, which is designed to boost vehicle performance, reduce maintenance, and minimize downtime.
These advanced battery packs will be installed in Škoda’s new fleet of battery-electric multiple units (BEMUs) ordered by České dráhy, the Czech national railway operator. This order marks a significant step in transitioning Czech railways to more sustainable operations, offering a practical solution for reducing carbon emissions in rail transport. The deal, valued at under USD$20 million, was finalized in the fourth quarter of 2024.
The agreement includes the delivery of 195 Pro 8C-850 battery packs for 15 BEMUs, along with a 15-year service agreement. This order is the first of its kind for ABB’s Traction Battery Pro Series from Škoda Group, a major Czech manufacturer of rolling stock. The Pro Battery Series, which was introduced at InnoTrans 2024 in Berlin, is designed for railway networks with partial electrification, allowing trains to operate seamlessly on both electrified and non-electrified tracks, offering a flexible, eco-friendly solution without the need for full infrastructure upgrades.
Edgar Keller, President of ABB’s Traction Division, commented, “This partnership with Škoda Group is a major milestone in our effort to deliver energy-efficient, immediately available solutions for railway operators. Our Pro Battery Series is ideally suited to partially electrified networks, providing a reliable way to cut emissions while maintaining high operational efficiency.”
Zdeněk Sváta, COO of Škoda Group, added, “By working with ABB, we’re supporting the railway industry’s commitment to a net-zero future. The Traction Battery Pro will enhance our innovative BEMUs, helping České dráhy offer a cleaner, quieter service. We’re excited to continue collaborating with ABB to promote more sustainable rail transport.”
