ABB and RMG, a prominent German manufacturer of gas meters for natural gas, biogas, and industrial gases, have entered into a supply agreement aimed at enhancing ABB’s offerings in the U.S. energy market. The deal will allow ABB to provide high-precision gas measurement solutions to energy customers, with RMG supplying ultrasonic gas meters to complement ABB’s existing portfolio in the custody transfer and midstream sectors.

ABB is a recognized leader in a variety of measurement technologies for the energy industry, with a focus on upstream and midstream markets. The company’s product lineup includes flow computers, well automation systems, Coriolis, vortex, swirl flowmeters, and electromagnetic and thermal mass flowmeters. The addition of RMG’s ultrasonic gas meters will further strengthen ABB’s instrumentation capabilities.

Amina Hamidi, Managing Director of ABB’s Business Line Instrumentation, ABB Measurement & Analytics, stated, “ABB is already supporting oil and gas clients with a range of flow technologies. Now, with RMG’s ultrasonic meters, we’re able to offer our customers precise gas measurement solutions, a perfect fit with our existing technologies. This partnership positions us well to help our U.S. customers excel.”

Thorsten Dietz, CEO of RMG, emphasized the collaboration’s benefits, saying, “This partnership combines the strengths of two established market leaders. Together, we’ll deliver advanced ultrasonic gas measurement technology backed by ABB’s trusted reputation, ensuring the highest standards of quality and service for our customers.”

Ultrasonic gas meters are becoming increasingly popular for measuring gas volumes in custody transfer applications. Their accuracy, reproducibility, broad measurement range, and low maintenance requirements have made them a preferred choice for gas transport companies.

These meters utilize sensors that generate repeatable pulses and incorporate high-speed electronics to accurately measure the transmission and reception of ultrasonic pulses. This setup allows for high pulse transmission rates, enabling precise readings of gas flow velocity every second.
