ABB has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Raumaster Paper to explore the development and implementation of integrated winder solutions in the United States. This collaboration is aimed at supporting paper mills in enhancing operational efficiency, modernizing legacy systems, and extending equipment lifecycle through targeted automation and mechanical upgrades.

Under the terms of the agreement, ABB will contribute its expertise in automation, drive systems, and digital technologies, while Raumaster Paper will provide its specialized knowledge in paper mill finishing equipment. The initiative is designed to offer mills a modernization pathway that avoids full system replacements, aligning with budgetary constraints common across the industry.

By combining ABB’s advanced automation platforms—including ABB Ability™ System 800xA®, motors, and drives—with Raumaster’s proven winder designs, the partnership aims to deliver comprehensive solutions that improve commissioning efficiency, streamline operations, and enhance operational safety. These solutions will be tailored to address the specific needs of mills operating aging assets while seeking to boost productivity and reduce downtime.

Raumaster Paper has more than four decades of experience in designing and manufacturing equipment for the paper finishing sector and has delivered over 110 high-capacity winders and rewinders worldwide. With a strong customer base across Europe and Asia and growing presence in North America, the company is recognized for its reliable, high-performance solutions that contribute to production optimization in the pulp and paper industry.

ABB has supplied more than 400 drive control systems for winder applications globally. Through this collaboration, the two companies aim to provide paper mills with an optimized and fully integrated winder control solution. The agreement includes the standardization of drive controls, machine control systems, and safety components, ensuring compatibility and operational consistency.

Pekka Leino, Managing Director at Raumaster Paper, stated: “This agreement combines extensive mechanical engineering capabilities with best-in-class automation technologies. The result is an efficient and future-ready solution that supports performance, quality, and equipment longevity for mills worldwide.”

Shankar Singh, Global Product Line Manager at ABB, added: “In today’s competitive environment, paper mills must extract maximum performance from existing infrastructure. Our collaboration with Raumaster Paper enables a holistic approach that improves reliability, simplifies operations, and delivers sustainable performance.”

The MoU also outlines joint efforts to pursue opportunities for both retrofit projects and new installations. This strategic collaboration reinforces the shared commitment of ABB and Raumaster Paper to support the paper industry’s transition toward greater efficiency, reliability, and sustainability.
