ABB has partnered with Quasar Expeditions to modernize a historic expedition yacht with advanced hybrid-electric propulsion technology, creating a new benchmark for sustainable tourism operations in the Galápagos Islands. The vessel, formerly known as Galú and originally built by renowned Italian shipbuilder Benetti in the 1970s, is undergoing a comprehensive transformation that will allow it to operate with significantly reduced emissions and noise levels. Upon completion, the yacht—renamed Quasar Conservation—will become one of the first expedition vessels of its kind to employ a fully integrated hybrid-electric propulsion system in the ecologically sensitive Galápagos region.

The modernization project combines ABB’s Onboard DC Grid™ platform, an advanced energy storage system, permanent magnet propulsion motors, and modern diesel generator technology. The integrated solution enables the vessel to operate entirely on battery power during anchorage and short-distance voyages, reducing fuel consumption while meeting strict environmental requirements established by the Galápagos National Park.

The initiative reflects a broader effort by Quasar Expeditions to align tourism operations with conservation objectives in one of the world’s most protected natural environments. By adopting hybrid-electric propulsion, the company aims to offer guests a quieter and more comfortable onboard experience while minimizing the environmental footprint of expedition cruising.

Beyond environmental benefits, the project significantly extends the operational life of the vessel. Modernization is expected to add up to 25 years of service while preserving the yacht’s original craftsmanship and distinctive design heritage. The approach also offers a more resource-efficient alternative to constructing a new vessel from scratch.

ABB’s modular power architecture has been selected specifically for its suitability in retrofit projects where onboard space is limited. The system provides high levels of reliability and fault tolerance, essential for vessels operating in remote locations. Integrated energy management technology continuously optimizes power generation, storage, and consumption to maximize operational efficiency.

The project highlights a growing trend within the expedition cruise industry toward advanced propulsion technologies that combine sustainability with passenger comfort. Hybrid-electric systems are increasingly being adopted by operators seeking to reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency, and comply with evolving environmental regulations.

Globally, ABB operates across electrification, automation and industrial digitalisation sectors with more than 140 years of industrial technology experience and approximately 110,000 employees worldwide. The company’s automation business supports industries including energy, water, manufacturing, marine and process industries through advanced industrial technologies and engineering solutions.
