ABB has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Paragon Energy Solutions to develop a unified approach to Instrumentation, Control, and Electrification systems for the U.S. nuclear sector. The agreement aims to deliver a comprehensive solution that covers both safety-critical and non-critical functions in existing nuclear facilities and future small modular reactors (SMRs).
Under this arrangement, ABB will provide automation, power distribution, and digital systems for non-critical areas within nuclear plants. This includes control room technologies, plant support systems, and the UNITROL® excitation platform. ABB’s offerings will also cover asset management tools and cyber security capabilities to improve infrastructure reliability and plant efficiency.
Paragon will concentrate on high-priority systems, including safety automation platforms like Reactor Protection Systems, neutron detection, and essential electrical infrastructure such as circuit breakers, switchgear, and motor controls. The company will also be responsible for component qualification and compliance with nuclear industry regulations.
The initiative reflects a broader push to meet rising U.S. energy demands, especially in sectors with significant power needs such as data centers and artificial intelligence. Federal support for SMRs—including a recent $900 million funding announcement from the U.S. Department of Energy—underscores the growing role of nuclear energy in grid stability and carbon reduction.
Doug VanTassell, President and CEO of Paragon, emphasized the importance of applying high-integrity systems to both current and next-generation plants. Per Erik Holsten, who leads ABB’s Energy Industries division, noted the importance of technology-driven solutions in supporting the nuclear industry’s modernization efforts.
ABB has a long-standing presence in industrial technology and operates globally with about 110,000 employees. The company specializes in digital and electrical systems for industries ranging from energy and water to manufacturing and transportation. Paragon, with over 30 years of experience, supplies certified equipment and services tailored for nuclear energy, focusing on cost reduction, system modernization, and reliability.
