ABB and Epiroc have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance their collaboration on underground trolley systems for the mining sector. This partnership aims to deliver integrated, comprehensive solutions that focus on increasing productivity, enhancing safety, and meeting decarbonization goals. The agreement builds upon previous successful technology implementations in Swedish mines.

The two companies will work together to conduct an in-depth feasibility study of their combined technologies. The goal is to meet the specific needs of mining operations, considering factors such as efficiency, sustainability, and the ability to manage high-power, automated, and safe operations. Any resulting solution will be built to withstand the tough conditions found in underground mines and adhere to approved safety standards.

Previously, ABB and Epiroc collaborated with Swedish mining firm Boliden to develop the world’s first battery-electric trolley truck system for underground operations. According to ABB’s Mining’s Moment report, 76% of global mining firms believe that vehicle electrification will provide significant benefits in both sustainability and operational efficiency, and 42% plan to invest in fleet decarbonization by 2026. In light of these findings, both companies are focused on accelerating change.

As mining companies seek effective solutions to electrify their vehicle fleets and fully decarbonize their operations, ABB and Epiroc are well-positioned to offer integrated trolley solutions using existing technologies. Both companies bring complementary expertise in underground systems, which will help drive forward the transition to greener mining practices.

Wayne Symes, President of Epiroc’s Underground division, commented, “Industry collaboration is essential to expedite our mining customers’ decarbonization efforts. We’re eager to deepen our relationship with ABB as we map out a sustainable, innovative future for mining, starting with the decarbonization of haulage fleets and expanding the trolley system to enhance both safety and productivity.”

Max Luedtke, Global Business Line Manager for Mining at ABB, added, “The need to decarbonize mine haulage fleets is increasingly urgent as we approach the 2030 sustainability targets. Collaboration across the sector is essential to accelerate progress, and Epiroc shares this commitment. Our recent Mining’s Moment report shows that 71% of mining companies believe successful partnerships are crucial to driving the energy transition. We look forward to what we can achieve together with Epiroc and the wider industry.”
