ABB is teaming up with Boliden, a leader in mining and smelting, to introduce Low-Carbon Zinc in its low-voltage power distribution systems. This zinc variant boasts a carbon footprint 75% lower than traditional zinc, supporting more sustainable electrical infrastructure. Crucial for fostering a fossil-free society, Low-Carbon Zinc is used to galvanize steel structures, protecting them from corrosion for up to 100 years and enhancing their longevity.

By using renewable energy in its operations, Boliden has reduced CO2 emissions to just 1.0kg per kilo of metal, significantly outperforming the industry average of 3.6kg. The partnership aims to further optimize Boliden’s value chain and electrify its processes, showcasing the impact of collaborations in advancing the circular economy and energy transition. Boliden’s Low-Carbon Zinc now features in ABB’s power distribution solutions in the company’s mines, where zinc ore is extracted.

Massimiliano Cifalitti, President of ABB Smart Power, highlighted that the partnership exemplifies how ABB helps industries improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Daniel Asplund, Zinc Sales Manager at Boliden, emphasized that this collaboration supports the company’s goal of high productivity with minimal climate impact, demonstrating leadership in sustainable practices.

ABB is committed to making 80% of its products and solutions align with its Circularity Approach by 2030, focusing on materials with lower carbon footprints. ABB’s Kabeldon power distribution cabinets, now made with Low-Carbon Zinc, further support sustainable infrastructure in neighborhoods, EV charging stations, renewables, factories, and mines.
