The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has finalized agreements with Armoured Vehicle Nigam Limited for the purchase of the Nag Missile System (NAMIS) Tracked version of the anti-tank platform, as well as with Force Motors Ltd and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd for the supply of approximately 5,000 Light Vehicles for the Armed Forces. The total value of the contracts stands at Rs 2,500 crore and falls under the “Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured)” category. These contracts were signed in New Delhi on March 27, 2025, in the presence of Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh.

The NAMIS (Tr) weapon system, developed by DRDO’s Defence Research & Development Laboratory, has been procured for Rs 1,801.34 crore. This contract marks a key advancement in enhancing the Indian Army’s anti-tank capabilities, particularly for Mechanised Infantry. It significantly boosts operational readiness in diverse combat scenarios.

NAMIS (Tr) is an advanced anti-tank missile system featuring a fire-and-forget mechanism and an enhanced sighting system, offering superior firepower and lethality. It is expected to play a transformative role in mechanised operations, providing a significant edge against enemy armour.

The procurement of these state-of-the-art light vehicles aims to improve mobility for the Armed Forces across various terrains and operational conditions. These vehicles, designed with modern technology, feature enhanced engine power to support a payload of 800 kg, ensuring efficient movement in challenging environments.

Both projects support the goal of increasing indigenisation and enhancing the country’s defence manufacturing capabilities. They hold substantial potential for generating both direct and indirect employment opportunities, particularly by involving the MSME sector in component manufacturing. These procurements represent a significant step towards modernising India’s defence infrastructure while empowering domestic industries in line with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision.
