Jatinder Singh talks about the difficulties Indian manufacturers face, especially regarding the understanding of customers. The awareness should be there to make them understand the price points and quality. He always sheds light on how the Indian government should be more helpful towards manufacturers if they want ‘Make in India’ to be a success.
AMPCO is short for American Metal Product Company. Founded in 1914, in the US, the company deals in copper-based alloy manufacturing. They deal with high speciality copper alloys like aluminium, bronze and high conductivity copper alloys. The products of the company are widely used in various industries like automotive, plastic injection, metal forming, aerospace, marine, steel industry, chemicals, etc. for very specific applications.
AMPCO METAL India Pvt Ltd started operating in India in 2012 to facilitate the services and products through warehousing facilities for the domestic customers. In an exclusive interview with The Machine Maker, Mr. Pawar, Director of AMPCO METALS India, said “By September 2022, we will be completing our first 10 years of AMPCO Metals in India.” He also said that AMPCO METAL India started machining services from 2015, therefore, they know the products quite well and are aware of how to machine those to get the best among finished machine parts, and precisely how this value-addition activity helps the customers get “end-to-end” products.
While describing the challenges in producing the raw materials, Mr. Pawar stated that they still lack the presence of the right kind of equipment, and the knowledge that is required to make them truly independent in the right aspects. That’s the reason they continue to import things from the principal company based in Europe. In India they stock the imports and manufacture only in terms of “machining” i.e., value add to the raw materials like wire-cutting, heat treatment and so on.

Highlighting the ‘Make in India’ campaign, Mr. Pawar talks about the tube bending tooling set which is entirely designed, manufactured and proven in India. AMPCO METAL produces the tools which bend tubes to desired angles while retaining the right finish. Describing the technical aspect of the product, he emphasizes over the fact that, it’s the designing that plays a big role in tube bending, where it has to be designed according to the specific needs of the machines. Machines of every brand have their individual specifications, and tools need to be designed to cater to each accordingly. He says, “India is technically quite advanced, so manufacturing and technology glides on easily. It is the designing that makes the difference because if the product is not designed well, the desired end result is not achieved”.
Taking inspiration from Make in India, Mr. Pawar said, “the campaign not only inspired the manufacturers, but has inspired the buyers also”. He backed this up by an example of his own company, where the suppliers welcomed the products made entirely in India. Seeing the suppliers support India-made products, inspired them immensely.
Mr. Pawar says, “Globally, Indian manufacturing is not lagging behind anyone”. He further adds, “The land of opportunities always gives you good talent. When I speak about talent, it is all about manpower and we have huge manpower with us. This talent is going to help us in future to be the leaders in industry. It is a matter of time before we will overtake China, the U.S.A and Europe”.
He acknowledges the fact that the past has been difficult, but we are now at the right pace of growth. “We are at par to Europe, U.S. and China and the day is not far when we will be global leaders”, says Mr. Pawar, confidently.
In the interview with The Machine Maker, in context of Make in India, Mr. Pawar said, “this is one of the best initiatives India could ever take. From the industrial point of view, ‘Make in India’ has been a fantastic initiative and I think everybody should get inspired by this”.
AMPCO METALS India Pvt Ltd is hopeful of the future and plans to manufacture more raw materials indigenously.
