WIDIA introduces the M1600 face mill today for roughing to semi-finishing operations in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and nodular iron materials. The M1600 operates well in a variety of machining situations, including low-power machines, unstable, non-rigid setups, lengthy overhangs, weak machines, or poor fixture settings, thanks to its 16 cutting edges and smart insert design.
A new face mill has been developed by WIDIA for rough to semi-finish machining of steels, stainless steels, cast and nodular irons. “Because face milling is one of the most popular machining procedures, we devised a versatile and cost-effective solution that provides significant improvements in metal removal rates in steel and cast iron for our customers,” said Anna Kim, WIDIA Indexable Product Manager.
Anna continued, “The M1600 is a turnkey solution for general engineering, energy, and automotive customers looking to decrease their face milling tooling inventory while increasing machining outputs.”
The precision-ground, 16-edged insert with a positive geometry allows for low cutting forces and low power consumption, resulting in longer tool life and a great cost per edge. The M1600 features a single universal insert geometry available in three different grades: WP35CM, WK15CM, and WU20PM.
The WP35CM grade is intended for all steels, whereas the WK15CM grade is intended for cast iron products and performs best in dry applications but may also be utilised in damp settings. The universal WU20PM grade can be used for dry and wet machining of steel, stainless steel, and high-temperature alloys.
The ‘smart’ insert design has a seating pad beneath the cutting edge, promoting smooth chip flow and reducing cutting forces on the tool. In addition, the insert features a curved cutting edge and is axially positive, resulting in lower power usage. These fundamental design advantages, together with 16 cutting edges, make the M1600 a cost-effective face milling choice.

M1600 face mills come in six metric diameter variants ranging from 50mm to 160mm. Inch diameters will be available in the fall of 2021. WIDIA authorised distribution partners can take orders for M1600 bodies and inserts, as well as additional WIDIA metal cutting tooling.
WIDIA has been providing high-quality milling, turning, holemaking, tapping, and systems tooling to metal cutting customers all over the world for almost 90 years. Customers benefit from dependability from product selection to post-delivery support due to product availability, digital connectivity, and an accessible network of authorised distribution partners.
