Cutting tool manufacturer Sandvik Coromant has enhanced the damping mechanism of its Silent Tools™ turning adaptors, resulting in even more reliable performance and improved surface finishes during internal turning operations, particularly at long overhangs. These updated adaptors work seamlessly with the new CoroTurn® SL cutting heads, which incorporate side-oriented internal through coolant.
With nearly 50 years of experience in vibration reduction, Sandvik Coromant’s Silent Tools™ system has been instrumental in facilitating machining at extended overhangs. Now, 33 models within the turning adaptor lineup (available in diameters from 16 to 25 mm and ⅝ to 1 inch) feature an upgraded damping mechanism that enhances their capabilities.
Åke Axner, Global Product Manager for Machine Integration at Sandvik Coromant, noted, “The damping mechanism has seen significant improvements compared to previous versions of the Silent Tools™ turning adaptors. The damper body, which used to require manual adjustments, is now calibrated and assembled using automated processes. This automation ensures a precise and predictable frequency range that aligns perfectly with each adaptor’s intended application and overhang, making these tools more effective in countering vibration forces.”
As a result of these upgrades, Silent Tools™ turning adaptors provide enhanced consistency and machining repeatability across all length-to-diameter ratios, leading to a more dependable and high-performing product.
Silent Tools™ and CoroTurn® SL: An Ideal Pairing
To maximize performance and increase productivity, Sandvik Coromant has developed a new generation of CoroTurn® SL cutting heads for smaller diameters (16 mm and 20 mm), designed to work with the enhanced turning adaptors.
“The latest CoroTurn® SL cutting heads benefit from Silent Tools™ technology, which significantly improves stability,” said Daniel Conessa, Global Product Manager for Turning at Sandvik Coromant. “When combined, these products enhance component quality, improve process stability, reduce waste and rework, and minimize unexpected machine downtime. Additionally, better chip control will help decrease downtime, a common challenge when boring long overhangs in smaller diameters.”
The upgraded Silent Tools™ turning adaptors in 16 mm and 20 mm (⅝ inch and ¾ inch) are designed to integrate with the new CoroTurn® SL cutting heads, while the 25 mm adaptors fit existing 25 mm CoroTurn® SL cutting heads equipped with high-precision coolant. This compatibility ensures that all previously mentioned benefits are realized.
“If our customers are looking for vibration-free workpieces and top-quality results while maintaining tight tolerances, the combination of CoroTurn® SL heads and Silent Tools™ achieves just that. This solution also helps to lower operational costs and boost productivity,” concluded Conessa.
