  • Kennametal has released the high-tech FBX series of drills, are useful in flat bottom drilling in aerospace manufacturing
  • FBX drills have 200% more metal removal rates than the norms
  • The unique design of the FBX flat bottom drill directs cutting forces into the machine spindle, minimizing deflection while increasing tool life and metal removal rates

Kennametal made us familiar with the FXB drills which help in the flat bottom drilling of structural aerospace parts. FBX drills help to deliver superior stability and a metal removal rate of 200 percent when operating on high-temperature alloys. This new modular drill is the first step in a trifecta concept of tooling. The Harvi Ultra 8X and the Harvi Hand mill all are included in this three-part concept.

These drills are specially designed by Kennametal to decrease the cycle time for these types of applications. The traditional ways of entering inside a surface through ramping were time-consuming, and removal rates of metal were normal while this high tech modular drill can remove a huge amount of metal. This metal removal drill eases off a lot of that headache.

George Roth, Product Manager, Kennametal says that the FBX drills increases the speed to a great extent with the usage of a combination of flat bottom drilling and z-axis plunge mills. The flat bottom drilling helps to eliminate radial forces while its four cutting edges provide for increased speed and feed, giving an almost 200 per cent faster rate of removing metals than traditional ramping. Which, in turn, frees up space for aeronautical manufacturing.

The drill is quite efficient; making good use of its four cutting edges that provide stability in challenging situations like chain-hole drilling. This high–tech drill with exchangeable coolant nozzles helps in eliminating excess heat. This drill is also equipped with a double cutting edge and chip splitter that increase its feed capabilities.

The drill bodies have a 60mm to75mm and 90mm diameters and have a long 150mm and a short 90 mm version. This modular drill can connect to Ball Taper Flange (BTF) mounts made by Kennametal.

The FBX drill is ideal for drilling into solid surface, chain holes, stainless steel and cast iron for its applications in general engineering and power. For more details, visit www.kennametal.com
