Igus new smart plastic linear guide detects maintenance in advance

At Igus, the quest to detect maintenance requirement of liners in linear systems at a primary stage has been achieved by engineers by developing a new intelligent linear guide and thus increasing the reliability. The smart Igus sensor monitors the wear of linear plain bearing liners and provides the details in advance for maintenance.

The phenomenon is simple, as a sensor in the bearing liners monitors and measure the individually determinable wear limit and send the signals in the form of a sound when it is reached. Thus enable to plan the maintenance beforehand and avoid uncalled system failures.

The period of bearing replacement is always a question for operators of system who use linear robots and linear systems non-stop. Linear guide must withstand enormous loads in packaging machine and glass processing industry up to machine tools. Thus to detect early wear of the sliding lubrication-free bearings made of high-performance plastics with advance maintenance plan, Igus has now developed a new smart sytem for its DRYLIN linear systems. The new smart plastics technology monitors the wear of dirt & dust-resistant bearings and provides signals to user when the wear limit is reached.

The new smart plastics linear system measures the wear of the bearings in operation and gives an early warning. Maintenance can be planned in advance. With the smart bearing replacement technology, the bearing can be changed in seconds directly on the rail.

Patented Technology to monitor wear

For the measurement and to get advance information of the wear of a bearing in all directions, an intelligent and patented technology has been introduced. To achieve the required results Igus incorporated a sensor in the bearing, which sends the measured data to the icom. The communication module after receiving data from all smart plastic sensors process it and forward it to the users. The received data can therefore be monitored by users with the terminal device of his choice and thus can always carry out the required maintenance, repair and replacement according to the data.

Quick and direct replacement on the rail

The replacement of bearing if required is quite easy, because of igus smart bearing replacement technique. There is no need to disassemble the linear axis or the multi axis gantry with toothed belt drive, as the technology enables direct replacement on the rail itself. The linear plain bearing can be replaced in no time and free tool makes sure to minimize the downtime, similar to a pit stop in Formula 1. The system can be resumed to its operation within a few minutes.
