Taiwan’s Smart Machinery Excels at EMO Hannover 2023

Taiwan’s machine tool industry stood out at EMO Hannover 2023, highlighting innovation, global strategies, and smart manufacturing capabilities. With over 144 exhibitors, Taiwan showcased forward-looking concepts like green manufacturing and high-performance components. Leaders emphasized Taiwan’s pivotal role in semiconductor, electric vehicle, and sustainable energy sectors. This reinforces Taiwan’s position in the global value chain, propelling towards a digital and eco-friendly manufacturing future.

EMO Hannover 2023, the world’s largest machine tool exhibition, commenced on September 18th in Germany. Taiwan’s Smart Machinery Overseas Promotion Project, organized by the Bureau of Foreign Trade and executed by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), stood at the forefront.

The project hosted a press conference and panel discussion on the same day. The focus was on how Taiwan’s machine tool industry is approaching semiconductor, electric vehicle, and sustainable energy sectors. This highlighted Taiwan’s robust research and development capabilities and compact industrial supply chain advantages.

Taiwan’s Supply Chain Captures Global Attention: Noteworthy Achievements in Machine Tool Industry

In 2022, Taiwan’s machine tool output value reached approximately US$3.93 billion, ranking seventh globally. Their export value of US$3 billion secured them the fifth position worldwide. At EMO Hannover, Simon Wang, the President & CEO of TAITRA, led a press conference with key organizations in Taiwan’s machine tool industry. This included the Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry (TAMI), Taiwan Machine Tool & Accessory Builders’ Association (TMBA), and others.

During the panel discussion, these leaders highlighted Taiwan’s capabilities in various application fields. For example, in the semiconductor sector, Taiwan can provide advanced processes and crucial peripheral equipment for chip production. Companies such as Tongtai, Quaser, FFG, and HIWIN have the experience and expertise to meet international demand.

Taiwan’s Global Market Strategies and Smart Manufacturing Capabilities

In response to the dynamic and unstable global economic landscape, Taiwan’s machine tool industry has embraced diversification. Patrick Chen, Chairman of TMBA, stressed the importance of shifting from globalization to shorter supply chains and localization in supply chain management.

To adapt to supply chain restructuring and production base relocation, manufacturers have redefined their strategies. YCM has partnered with TRIMILL, FFG acquired Germany’s MAG Group, and Tongtai acquired companies in France and Austria. These collaborations strengthen Taiwan’s position in the global market.

David Chuang from TAMI emphasized the need for continuous upgrading and transformation within the machinery industry. Whether in research and development or manufacturing, excellence in machinery technology is vital.

Taiwan’s machine tool industry stands as the seventh largest globally, with an annual production value exceeding 4 billion USD. At EMO 2023, a panel discussion highlighted Taiwan’s capabilities in various industries. The discussions revolved around sustainable development, smart machinery collaboration trends, and innovative applications.

Throughout the exhibition, the International Trade Administration’s overseas smart machinery promotion program facilitated negotiations and international orders. Additionally, a series of Taiwan Flavor Happy Hour networking events, in collaboration with various partners, brought together visitors to experience Taiwan’s scenic beauty, beverages, and cuisine.
