In the wake of the Building Energy Act fervour, the ambitious climate targets have not been overlooked. Prof. Matthias Weigold, Head of the Institute of Production Management, Technology, and Machine Tools (PTW) at TU Darmstadt, emphasizes the need for comprehensive climate-neutral strategies beyond mere carbon offsetting. He will be the presenter of the July edition of Let’s Talk Science, where he aims to shed light on the critical role technological solutions play in tackling climate change.
With industrial processes accounting for over a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions, the imperative to achieve climate neutrality extends far beyond isolated adjustments. Professor Weigold stresses the importance of putting the entire economy and society on a sustainable path. “As engineers, we have to come up with better solutions,” he states, highlighting the vast potential offered by industrial processes to reduce and substitute carbon emissions.
During the Let’s Talk Science session, Professor Weigold will draw attention to the areas in the machine environment that hold the most potential for emissions reduction. Minimizing climate-damaging greenhouse gases requires transparency, which can be achieved through carbon footprinting. He emphasizes that carbon footprinting will become a critical aspect due to the complexity and bureaucracy outlined in the European Union’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Directive. Nevertheless, Professor Weigold believes that automation and standardization can make these requirements manageable, even for medium-sized companies. The presentation will delve into the practical implementation of carbon footprinting, with a specific focus on meeting the needs of international companies.
The session aims to raise awareness among companies about the role of technological solutions in combating climate change successfully. By exploring best practices and innovative solutions within the machine environment, Professor Weigold seeks to inspire a collective effort in achieving climate-neutral production.
Registrations are now open for the Let’s Talk Science event scheduled for 26 July 2023, from 11:30 to 12:30. The discussion, conducted in English, will provide a platform for participants to learn about the opportunities for climate-neutral production and engage with representatives from other companies to exchange insights and actions taken towards sustainability.
In the future, this Let’s Talk Science session is expected to foster collaborative efforts and further advancements in climate-neutral production. By promoting technological innovations and sharing best practices, companies are set to make significant strides in their journey towards achieving climate neutrality. Together, these efforts will play a vital role in creating a sustainable and environmentally conscious future for industries and societies worldwide.
