Comtech Telecommunications Corp has announced the delivery of the first set of Enterprise Digital Intermediate Frequency Multicarrier (EDIM) modems to the United States Army, marking a significant milestone under a $48.6 million contract focused on modernising military satellite communications infrastructure. The delivery represents an important step in the transition toward next-generation satellite communications (SATCOM) systems and supports the programme’s upcoming Final Acceptance Testing phase. The EDIM initiative is designed to replace legacy Enhanced Bandwidth Efficient Modems currently used across multiple branches of the US military, including the Army, Navy and Air Force, with advanced software-defined solutions.
Company leadership highlighted the milestone as a reflection of engineering progress and operational readiness, noting that the programme is central to enhancing the performance, flexibility and resilience of military communications networks. The EDIM modems are being developed to support multiple satellite providers, ensuring interoperability across diverse platforms and mission environments.
As part of the initial rollout, several units have been delivered to industry partners to support integration efforts and the development of electronic training manuals. This collaborative approach is expected to streamline deployment and ensure that operators are equipped to manage the new systems effectively.
A key feature of the EDIM modem is its compliance with Digital Intermediate Frequency Interoperability (DIFI) standards, making it the first modem of its kind to be fielded by the US Army. This capability establishes a new benchmark for secure, high-performance communications, enabling advanced applications that require precision, reliability and adaptability in dynamic operational scenarios.
In addition to hardware delivery, the programme includes the development of an EDIM Modem Management System, which will allow for ongoing performance enhancements and lifecycle support. This ensures that the platform remains adaptable to evolving mission requirements and technological advancements.
The EDIM system is expected to play a mission-critical role in enabling secure, interoperable communications across a wide range of defence operations. Following successful testing and validation, the modems are anticipated to be deployed more broadly, supporting the US military’s long-term SATCOM modernisation objectives.
With decades of experience in mission-critical communications technologies, Comtech continues to expand its role as a key provider of advanced solutions for government and commercial customers worldwide.
