Samvardhana Motherson International Limited (Motherson) and its joint venture partner, Marelli, have officially inaugurated a new, state-of-the-art automotive lighting plant in Sanand, Gujarat. This facility marks a significant expansion for Marelli Motherson Lighting India (MMLI) and is designed to address the increasing requirements of the Indian passenger vehicle market through localized, high-technology solutions.
The new plant spans approximately 8,200 square meters and is equipped with advanced manufacturing infrastructure. A key technical feature of the facility is its high-tonnage multi-color molding machines, ranging from 2,000T to 2,700T. These capabilities enable the production of complex, large-scale automotive components, making this the first facility in India capable of manufacturing edge-to-edge single-piece long lighting parts.
The Sanand facility is dedicated exclusively to the production of exterior automotive lighting systems. By focusing on high-volume, advanced lighting solutions, the plant supports the industry’s shift toward more sophisticated vehicle aesthetics and safety features. Among the industry-first innovations to be produced at this site are India’s first single-piece, end-to-end Daytime Running Lights (DRL) and single-piece Rear Combination Lamps (RCL). Furthermore, the facility will facilitate the localization of the slimmest headlamp modules currently available in the country.

The MMLI joint venture, established in 2008, combines Marelli’s global technology background with Motherson’s integrated manufacturing footprint in India. The Sanand plant is MMLI’s second facility in the region, positioned to provide proximity to major automotive manufacturing hubs.
Frank Huber, President of Marelli’s Lighting business, noted that the partnership integrates global innovation with local production strength. The facility is also designed with a focus on sustainable operations, featuring rooftop solar power and plans for future open-access green power sourcing to reduce its environmental footprint.
