A high-voltage airborne power supply developed by Versabyte Data Systems, a Sanlayan Group company, has been formally handed over to the Indian Armed Forces as part of a major technology transfer event hosted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The transfer took place at DRDO Bhawan in New Delhi and featured seven indigenous technologies developed under DRDO’s Technology Development Fund (TDF).
The power supply system, designed for use in active self-protection jammers operating in both pulse and continuous wave modes, is a vital subsystem that enhances aircraft survivability and mission effectiveness. Developed through close collaboration between DRDO scientists and Versabyte’s engineering teams, the solution draws on nearly four decades of experience in designing rugged, high-reliability power electronics for demanding defence applications.
All seven technologies showcased during the event were conceived, engineered, and validated by Indian industry under the TDF framework. The milestone highlights India’s growing capability to develop complex strategic subsystems domestically and reinforces the Government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative aimed at strengthening self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
Public–private collaboration has emerged as a key driver of India’s defence modernisation efforts. Through the Technology Development Fund, DRDO has established a structured pathway that enables start-ups, MSMEs, and established firms to undertake advanced research and development in partnership with DRDO laboratories, progressing innovations from concept to deployable systems.
This approach has enabled a broad spectrum of companies—from agile deep-technology enterprises such as Sanlayan to established defence manufacturers like Versabyte—to develop indigenous solutions across areas including sensors, power electronics, avionics, propulsion, and advanced materials that were previously dependent on imports.
India’s expanding TDF portfolio reflects a clear national objective: to accelerate the development of critical technologies, reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, and shorten the time between laboratory innovation and operational deployment. Recent committee deliberations have emphasised streamlined acquisition processes to ensure that TDF-developed technologies transition quickly into service, allowing industry partners to align development cycles with operational needs and scale production efficiently.
Speaking at the handover, R Chandra Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of Versabyte, said the recognition affirms the company’s commitment to building world-class indigenous power systems for advanced defence platforms. He formally transferred the technology to Air Marshal Awdhesh Kumar Bharti, SYSM, AVSM, VM, Deputy Chief of the Air Staff, in the presence of DRDO Chairman Samir V Kamat and Vice Admiral Vineet McCarthy, AVSM, Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff.
Versabyte’s recent integration into the Sanlayan Group has expanded the group’s capabilities across the defence electronics value chain, strengthening India’s efforts toward import substitution in critical subsystems. Rahul Vamshidhar, Co-founder and Chief Business Officer of Sanlayan, noted that the group had received the Most Innovative Project Award from DRDO’s Electronics and Communication Systems Cluster just two months earlier for its airborne electronic warfare payload solution at Samanvay 2025. He said the latest milestone demonstrates the impact of close collaboration between Indian scientists and industry engineers, accelerating indigenous defence innovation. Together, Sanlayan and Versabyte are contributing to a more resilient and self-reliant defence manufacturing ecosystem by advancing technologies that enhance India’s operational preparedness and strategic independence.
Headquartered in Bengaluru, Sanlayan focuses on addressing advanced technology challenges critical to India’s defence sector. The company has grown into a vertically integrated group with capabilities spanning radar systems, electronic warfare, avionics, power systems, and AI- and ML-driven signal and data processing software. Backed by leading Indian venture capital firms, Sanlayan aims to accelerate indigenous defence technology development and strengthen India’s long-term strategic capabilities.
