Protolabs has significantly increased its U.S. manufacturing capacity for metal 3D-printed components in 2025, responding to rising domestic demand across multiple industries. The expansion includes major investments in additive manufacturing systems and industry-specific certifications to serve broader application requirements.

The company recently added four large-format, dual-laser Colibrium Additive M2 metal printers, increasing its ability to produce lightweight, complex metal parts. This technology is especially suited for customers in aerospace, defense, and medical devices, where metal additive manufacturing is increasingly used for production-ready components.

These printers have been installed at Protolabs’ newly opened 120,000 sq ft facility in Raleigh, North Carolina—one of the largest direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) plants in the country. Housing nearly 40 DMLS machines, the facility can produce more than 8,000 metal parts each month. To support key sectors, Protolabs has also obtained ISO 13485 certification for medical-grade manufacturing and AS9100D certification for aerospace production.

“Protolabs’ broad additive manufacturing capabilities have positioned us as the leading partner for 3D-printed parts in the US” said Suresh Krishna, President and CEO of Protolabs. “We remain committed to evolving with our customers’ needs and investing in technologies that fuel ongoing innovation.”

During a recent open house event, leaders in the medical and aerospace fields met with Protolabs’ additive manufacturing experts to review how the company’s metal 3D-printing portfolio, secondary finishing services, and engineering support enhance product development. “Ultimately, Protolabs’ combination of capacity, expertise, and fast turnaround provides immense value to industries that rely on precision and speed—from prototype development through final production,” said Kenny Capps, Director of 3D Printing Manufacturing Operations.

This investment supports the continued growth of metal additive manufacturing, as new materials, advanced equipment, and improved post-processing capabilities expand what is possible for end-use applications. Companies can take advantage of lightweighting and design flexibility while maintaining strict part quality standards.

Protolabs is a fast-turn manufacturing service provider that helps companies accelerate product development and production across the entire lifecycle. From custom prototypes to full-scale end-use parts, Protolabs supports engineers, designers, and supply chain teams in every stage of manufacturing.
