Vedanta Aluminium Expands Low-Carbon Aluminium Portfolio with Restora Production

Manufacturing-News

Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has further strengthened its low-carbon offerings with the launch of Restora at its Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO) plant in Korba, Chhattisgarh. BALCO, a Vedanta Limited subsidiary, will now manufacture Restora ingots as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainable production and its Net Zero Carbon 2050 goal.

Restora is produced using renewable energy and maintains a verified greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity of less than 4 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per tonne of aluminium, meeting global standards for low-carbon aluminium. This move positions Vedanta Aluminium as a key contributor to decarbonized supply chains, reflecting BALCO’s alignment with Vedanta’s broader sustainability agenda. Vedanta Aluminium’s Jharsuguda smelter has been producing Restora since early 2022 and also manufactures Restora Ultra, an ultra-low carbon aluminium product made from recycled materials.

The launch at BALCO expands the company’s low-carbon footprint and is designed to meet the growing demand for sustainable materials in India and worldwide. Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, stated, “Restora has already set a benchmark in low-carbon aluminium production. By introducing it at BALCO, we are broadening our sustainable product portfolio and reinforcing India’s position as a global hub for climate-conscious industrial growth.”

Rajesh Kumar, CEO and Director of BALCO, added, “Restora caters to industries such as automotive, construction, electricals, packaging, and renewable energy, helping our customers build greener value chains. While we are starting with ingots, we have the capability to develop value-added products under the Restora brand to address evolving industry needs.”

Expanding Restora production at BALCO is part of Vedanta Aluminium’s broader strategy to lower carbon emissions across its operations. Through clean energy adoption and operational efficiencies, the company has reduced GHG intensity by 8.96% since FY21. Aluminium, regarded as a critical material for clean energy and climate-resilient infrastructure, is central to Vedanta Aluminium’s vision of sustainable industrial growth.

Vedanta Aluminium’s Centre of Excellence brings together technical, operational, and marketing expertise to develop innovative aluminium products for high-growth sectors including electric mobility, renewable energy, aerospace, and infrastructure. With Restora, the company continues to deliver low-carbon aluminium solutions that advance India’s industrial sustainability and global leadership.

Vedanta Aluminium, a business unit of Vedanta Limited, is India’s largest aluminium producer, accounting for over half of the country’s output with 2.42 million tonnes in FY25. It is a leader in value-added aluminium products serving core industries and ranked 2nd in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2024 for the aluminium sector. With world-class smelters, alumina refineries, and power plants, Vedanta Aluminium drives the development of aluminium as the ‘Metal of the Future,’ supporting sustainable applications across energy, infrastructure, and emerging technologies.
