Lockheed Martin Skunk Works® and BAE Systems’ FalconWorks have entered into a new strategic collaboration, unveiled during the DSEI global defence exhibition in the UK. The partnership aims to design and develop a range of autonomous uncrewed air systems that are modular, cost-efficient, and capable of being deployed quickly across various mission environments.
The two companies’ advanced research arms—Skunk Works and FalconWorks—will pool their expertise in rapid design, prototyping, and cutting-edge manufacturing to create a system designed for flexibility and mission adaptability. The focus of the initial development will be to deliver electronic warfare and strike capabilities that can support and extend the effectiveness and survivability of existing crewed combat aircraft.
The envisioned system will feature a modular architecture, making it adaptable for a variety of missions. It will also be capable of launching through multiple methods, including air drops, ground-based platforms, naval vessels, and even deployment from large cargo aircraft.
This announcement reflects a growing global focus on blending crewed and uncrewed aircraft to meet the operational demands of modern warfare. Defence forces are increasingly seeking scalable and affordable air power to reinforce frontline assets and respond to fast-evolving threat landscapes.
“We’re proud to work alongside BAE Systems to bring together our strengths in prototyping and advanced design,” said OJ Sanchez, Vice President and General Manager at Lockheed Martin Skunk Works. “Together, we’re opening new doors for our customers and advancing the role of autonomous air platforms in future conflicts.”
Dave Holmes, Managing Director at BAE Systems’ FalconWorks, added “This collaboration allows us to fast-track the development of disruptive technologies that meet the urgent needs of modern military operations. Our shared capabilities will help deliver meaningful results at speed.”
