The 65th Annual Convention of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) featured a Special Plenary Session on “Key Enablers Driving Global Leadership in Sustainable Mobility,” where policymakers and industry leaders outlined strategies to position India as a global frontrunner in sustainable mobility by 2047. Discussions focused on policy frameworks, technological innovation, and collaborative efforts to accelerate the transition toward greener mobility.

Guest of Honour, Tarun Kapoor, Adviser to the Hon’ble Prime Minister, emphasized the sector’s economic importance and urged stronger collaboration with the Government through the Anusandhan National Research Foundation. He called for greater adoption of biofuels, gaseous fuels, and electric mobility while highlighting compressed bio-gas as a major opportunity.

Dr Hanif Qureshi, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries, underscored the Ministry’s initiatives since 2015 to promote electric mobility, noting the installation of over 8,900 chargers and the deployment of about 10,900 electric buses. He urged fresh investments in electric heavy vehicles to strengthen India’s sustainability roadmap.

Industry leaders including Dr Pawan Goenka, Shenu Agarwal, Unsoo Kim, and KN Radhakrishnan highlighted exports, localisation, renewable energy integration, and R&D as critical enablers. They stressed that sustainable mobility would not only improve quality of life and energy security but also drive India’s emergence as a global hub for clean and advanced mobility solutions.

The session concluded with a consensus that India’s automotive ecosystem—spanning passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, two- and three-wheelers, and advanced technologies like EVs and hydrogen—has the capability to achieve global leadership in sustainable mobility through innovation, policy support, and collaborative action.
