Concord Control Systems Limited (CCSL), a leading Indian manufacturer of embedded electronic and rail solutions, has developed the nation’s first 100% indigenous zero-emission propulsion system. Designed and manufactured entirely in India, this breakthrough underscores the country’s engineering strength and supports the target of achieving complete railway electrification by 2030.

Powered by Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries and featuring a DC chopper-based drive, the system replaces conventional diesel engines that idle continuously and consume fuel. Instead, it operates only when required, ensuring higher efficiency, significant cost savings, and zero emissions.

Except for a few semiconductor devices, all core components—including the chopper, Vehicle Control Unit (VCU), driver display, sensors, and controllers—have been designed and produced by Concord. This technology also introduces several firsts, such as high-voltage battery integration with choppers, CAN-based Vehicle Control Units, and fibre-optic EMI-immune signal transmission, placing the innovation at the forefront globally.

Highlighting the milestone, Sadasivan V, Principal Executive Director of Advanced Rail, said, “This achievement proves that India can lead in next-generation rail technology, setting a new benchmark for sustainable and cost-efficient solutions.” Nitin Jain, Joint Managing Director of Concord Control Systems, added, “Delivering the country’s first fully indigenous zero-emission propulsion system is a proud moment for India’s innovation ecosystem. It aligns with Indian Railways’ mission of 100% electrification by 2030.”

The propulsion has been retrofitted on a 700 HP diesel-electric platform, delivering 800A peak current to traction motors. It is equipped with digital driver displays, CCTV/DVR systems, and Remote Monitoring System (RMS) capabilities for real-time diagnostics and predictive maintenance.

Beyond environmental benefits, the solution improves efficiency, reduces idle losses, and enhances operational safety, offering a scalable model for converting diesel locomotives into sustainable platforms. This innovation reaffirms Concord’s leadership in Indian railway technology and strengthens the country’s move toward sustainable, self-reliant, and world-class rail infrastructure.
