Mukand Sumi Special Steel Limited (MSSSL), a joint venture between Bajaj Group and Sumitomo Corporation, has announced a major investment of ₹2,345 crore for setting up a greenfield integrated steel facility in Kanakapura, Koppal district, Karnataka. The project aims to double the company’s annual production capacity to 700,000 tonnes and is expected to be operational by early 2028, subject to regulatory approvals.
Established in 2018, MSSSL currently produces 350,000 tonnes annually, supplying high-grade steel products such as bars and wire rods to the automotive and engineering sectors. The upcoming plant will feature advanced steelmaking technologies, including jumbo bloom casters, state-of-the-art rolling mills, and cutting-edge testing facilities. This will enable the production of specialized steel grades for powertrain systems, railways, and bearing applications.
The plant is designed with a strong focus on sustainability, operating under a Zero Liquid, Solid, and Gaseous Discharge Model. Over 95% of its energy needs will come from renewable sources, and the facility is aligned with MSSSL’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Future expansion phases will integrate hydrogen-ready infrastructure and carbon capture technologies, reinforcing the company’s commitment to green steel manufacturing.
The 0.35 million tonnes per annum facility will include iron making, steel making, and blooming mill operations, and will incorporate automation, digital integration, and flexible production systems to enhance product quality and energy efficiency. MSSSL’s expansion aligns with rising domestic and global demand for high-performance special steel, particularly in sectors such as automotive, energy, railways, and infrastructure. The company currently supplies to both Indian and international clients and is focused on expanding its role as a strategic supplier to global OEMs across industries including oil and gas, transport, and precision engineering.
