BorgWarner to Supply Electric Cross Differential for Chinese EV Platform

BorgWarner has landed a new contract to supply its electric cross differential (eXD) system for electric vehicles manufactured by a major Chinese OEM. As the shift to electrified mobility continues, the eXD offers a sophisticated solution for improving traction, stability, and control in a wide range of driving conditions.

This technology, which actively manages torque between the left and right wheels on the same axle, is designed to enhance driving dynamics—especially in electric vehicles where instant torque delivery can pose unique control challenges. “BorgWarner’s eXD system strengthens vehicle handling and stability across multiple conditions,” said Isabelle McKenzie, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc and President and General Manager of the Drivetrain and Morse Systems division. “After demonstrating strong results in high-performance combustion vehicles, we’re now applying the same benefits to the EV space to improve driver confidence and safety.”

The system continuously monitors road conditions and vehicle behavior, adapting in real time to optimize grip and responsiveness. During aggressive driving maneuvers—such as quick acceleration, lane changes, or tight corners—the eXD helps maintain control by redistributing power to the wheels with the most traction.

In dry conditions, the system allows greater power transfer to the outer wheels, improving agility and cornering precision. On low-friction surfaces like snow, mud, or ice, it quickly reduces torque to slipping wheels and reallocates force to those with better grip, reducing the risk of spin and improving vehicle control.

BorgWarner has a strong commitment to sustainability, developing technologies that improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and enhance vehicle performance. The company serves a diverse customer base, including automakers, suppliers, and consumers worldwide, with a growing emphasis on electric mobility and hybrid systems. Headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan, BorgWarner operates in multiple countries and continues to lead the way in advancing automotive technologies.
