Coal India and Konkan Railway Sign MoU to Develop Rail Infrastructure

Coal India Limited (CIL), the world’s largest coal producer, and Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) have entered into a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the development of rail infrastructure for CIL and its subsidiaries. The MoU was formally executed today in Kolkata.

The partnership is aimed at strengthening coal evacuation systems and enhancing logistical efficiency through the expansion and modernization of railway infrastructure. The proposed initiatives will facilitate faster, safer, and more sustainable movement of coal from CIL’s mines to key consumption centers, supporting India’s growing energy requirements. The collaboration underscores the shared commitment of both organizations to boost infrastructure development, improve operational efficiency, and contribute to India’s energy security.

Coal India Limited, headquartered in Kolkata, is the world’s largest coal producer and a Maharatna Public Sector Enterprise under the Government of India. Established in 1975, CIL operates through its eight subsidiaries spread across major coal-bearing regions of the country.

The company plays a vital role in meeting India’s energy needs, accounting for over 80% of the nation’s domestic coal production. With a focus on sustainable mining practices, technological modernization, and enhanced logistics, Coal India continues to support the country’s energy security while working towards greater efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Konkan Railway Corporation Limited is a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Railways, Government of India. Incorporated in 1990, KRCL is best known for constructing and operating the Konkan Railway line along the picturesque but challenging terrain of India’s west coast, connecting Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka.

The corporation has earned recognition for its engineering expertise in executing complex infrastructure projects, including tunnels, bridges, and difficult rail alignments. Beyond passenger and freight operations, KRCL also undertakes consultancy, construction, and technology-driven rail solutions, contributing significantly to India’s railway development.
