TruAlt Bioenergy Limited, one of India’s largest biofuels producers, has entered into a joint venture with GAIL (India) Limited, the country’s leading natural gas company and a Maharatna PSU, to accelerate the development of the Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) sector. Under the agreement, GAIL will acquire a 49% equity stake in Leafiniti Bioenergy Pvt Ltd (LBPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of TruAlt, subject to completion of conditions precedent and approval from DIPAM. LBPL currently operates a 10.2 TPD press-mud-based CBG facility in Karnataka, commissioned in 2021.

The joint venture will combine TruAlt’s bioenergy production expertise with GAIL’s infrastructure and market reach to establish a nationwide network of greenfield CBG plants. In the first phase, six advanced plants will be set up, each with a capacity of 12 tonnes per day, mainly sourcing inputs from sugar mills. Together, these facilities will produce nearly 24,000 tonnes of CBG annually while also generating more than 4.8 lakh tonnes of organic manure by-products, supporting circular agriculture and improving soil health. The project is expected to create up to 1,050 direct and indirect jobs, boosting rural employment and economic activity.

The initiative also carries significant environmental benefits. Once operational, the first phase is projected to replace 17,000 tonnes of fossil fuels each year and prevent about 8,000 tonnes of methane emissions, contributing to India’s net-zero 2070 target.

Rajeev Kumar Singhal, Director (Business Development) at GAIL, said, “This agreement marks a key step in our commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat and reinforces GAIL’s positioning as a clean fuel company. The joint venture will strengthen India’s biofuel movement, enhance energy security, and promote sustainable growth.”

Vijay Nirani, Founder and Managing Director of TruAlt Bioenergy, added, “Through this partnership, we are building a national ecosystem for CBG, transforming agricultural residues into economic value, empowering farmers, and delivering measurable carbon reductions. This is not just a commercial alliance but a commitment towards creating a decentralised, circular energy economy that supports rural livelihoods and advances India’s climate goals.”

TruAlt Bioenergy is a leading biofuels company with a strong presence in the ethanol and CBG sectors. The company was among the early participants in the Government of India’s SATAT initiative for promoting sustainable alternatives in transport. Through Leafiniti Bioenergy, TruAlt operates CBG plants that also generate solid and liquid fermented organic manure, enabling circular agriculture and waste-to-energy innovation. With an integrated platform and strong focus on rural value creation, the company continues to expand its role in India’s clean energy transition.
